Aooni IPA (Blue Demon of India) by Yo-Ho Brewery

Aooni02.jpg

Brewed by Yo-Ho Brewery in Nagano, this easy to find India Pale Ale may be one of your first IPAs in Japan. Found in many convenience stores all over Japan, this beer has a lot of hop character but won’t put a dent in your wallet, usually going for under 300JPY for a 330ml can.

This beer is devilishly sharp and bitter with a clear body. The name Aooni can be loosely translated as “Blue Ogre (or “Demon”) of India,” and this beer is a heavy hitter, much to its namesake. With heavy hop flavours hinted from the initial fruity aroma, balanced malt characteristics, a lingering bitterness, and a higher-than-average ABV, this beer will have you wanting more and more.

Often times this beer is found with other selections from Yo-Ho Brewery including Yona Yona Ale and Suiyobi-no-Neko and offers a delightful distraction from the major brews usually found in stores. Grab one today and see how you fair against the Blue Demon!

Style: India Pale Ale

ABV: 7%

Author’s Notes: This is one of my go-to beers at many convenience stores or my local Seijo-Ishii and is part of my Hop Trifecta. With the amount of flavour these little cans pack, the 7% ABV is hardly noticeable on the pallet but can definitely be felt later.
